5 Reasons Sewing Is Good for Children

As the summer holidays approach, thoughts turn towards how those long weeks can be filled and little ones kept occupied! Sewing is such a great option for a number of reasons.
Sewing develops fine motor skills
Sewing helps children improve hand strength, dexterity and hand-eye coordination. Threading needles, pinning fabric and using scissors all build the small muscle movements needed for handwriting and other everyday tasks.
Builds confidence and resilience
Completing a sewing project gives children a real sense of achievement. They also learn that mistakes can be unpicked and corrected, helping them develop perseverance and a positive attitude towards challenges.

Encourages creativity
Sewing allows children to express themselves by choosing fabrics, colours and embellishments. They can turn their ideas into something unique, boosting imagination and creative thinking.
Improves focus and patience
Sewing requires children to follow instructions, work through steps in order and pay attention to detail. These skills help improve concentration and patience, which can benefit learning in school too.

Teaches valuable life skills
Learning to sew equips children with practical skills they'll use throughout life, from repairing clothes to making gifts and home accessories. It also encourages sustainability by showing them how to mend and reuse items instead of throwing them away.
