Have you ever looked at a beautiful handmade garment and thought, “I’d love to be able to make something like that”?
Perhaps you can use a sewing machine and have made a few simple projects, but the thought of opening a commercial dressmaking pattern feels a little daunting. Or maybe you’ve always wanted to try dressmaking but simply don’t know where to start.
That’s where the Pyjama Making – Dressmaking in 4 Weeks workshop at the White Rose Sewing & Craft Centre in Harrogate comes in!
Over four relaxed, practical sessions, I’ll guide you through the process of taking a commercial sewing pattern and turning it into a pair of beautiful, wearable pyjama bottoms.
And the best bit? By the end of the four weeks, you’ll have gained skills that you can use for lots of future dressmaking projects too.
Why pyjamas are the perfect first dressmaking project
Pyjama bottoms are a great introduction to dressmaking because they allow you to learn some of the fundamental techniques involved in making clothes without being overwhelmed by a complicated garment.
You’ll learn how to work with a commercial pattern, choose the correct size, understand pattern markings and construction instructions, cut your fabric accurately and gradually build your garment.
Once you’ve successfully made your first pair, you’ll have a much better understanding of how dressmaking patterns work — and hopefully a lot more confidence to tackle your next project!
What will you learn during the four weeks?
The workshop is designed to take you through the process step by step, with plenty of guidance along the way.
Week 1 – Understanding your pattern
We’ll start by getting to grips with the Jaimie Pyjamas pattern from Tilly and the Buttons.
Commercial sewing patterns can look rather confusing when you first open them, so we’ll take the time to understand exactly what all those markings, measurements and instructions mean.
We’ll cover:
How to read a commercial pattern envelope
Understanding the information on the back of the envelope
Choosing the appropriate size
Taking your body measurements
Making design decisions
Choosing suitable fabric
Understanding fabric requirements
Preparing and cutting out your paper pattern
This first session is all about building your confidence before you even put your scissors into your fabric!
Week 2 – Cutting out and getting started
Once we’ve prepared our patterns, it’s time to start working with our fabric.
You’ll learn how to lay out your pattern pieces correctly, cut your fabric accurately and transfer important markings such as notches.
We’ll then begin constructing the pyjama bottoms, with guidance throughout the process.
Week 3 – Constructing your pyjamas
By week three, your pyjamas will really start to take shape!
We’ll continue with the construction, including sewing the side seams and working with the crotch curve.
I’ll guide you through each stage and help you understand why we’re doing things in a particular way, rather than simply telling you which pieces to sew together.
The aim is to give you the knowledge and confidence to understand the construction of future garments too.
Week 4 – Finishing touches
The final session is when everything comes together.
We’ll complete the waistband and add the elastic before finishing the hems.
There’s something incredibly satisfying about putting on a garment that you’ve made yourself — even when it’s your very first pair of pyjama bottoms!
By the end of the four weeks, you’ll have a finished pair of handmade pyjamas and, more importantly, a much better understanding of the dressmaking process.
What’s included?
The Jaimie Pyjamas pattern is included in the course price, along with thread and waist elastic, so you don’t need to worry about buying those separately.
You simply need to bring your chosen fabric.
If you’re unsure about what fabric to buy or how much you’ll need, I’m very happy to offer guidance before the course starts.
The course is currently £200 and takes place at the White Rose Sewing & Craft Centre in Harrogate. Classes are deliberately kept very small, with a maximum of three participants, so there’s plenty of opportunity for individual help and guidance.
Do I need to be a complete beginner?
This particular workshop is aimed at people who already have basic sewing knowledge, so you don't need any previous dressmaking experience.
If you can use a sewing machine and have perhaps made some simple sewing projects before, this could be the perfect next step.
You don't need to consider yourself an experienced dressmaker — that's what you're here to learn!

Why learn in a small group?
One of the things I love about teaching sewing is seeing how much more confident people become when they have someone there to answer those little questions that inevitably come up.
“Have I cut this the right way?”
“What does this marking mean?”
“Why doesn't this piece seem to fit?”
“Which size should I make?”
These are all completely normal questions when you're learning dressmaking!
With just three participants, the workshop has a friendly, relaxed atmosphere while still giving you plenty of individual support.
There's nothing quite like wearing something you've made yourself
Learning to sew your own clothes isn't just about saving money or following a pattern.
It's about learning a skill that you can continue developing for years.
Once you've made your first pair of pyjamas, you might find yourself looking at patterns in a completely different way. Suddenly those mysterious pattern envelopes start to make sense. You understand how pieces fit together. You know what a notch is for. And you're beginning to understand how a garment goes from a piece of fabric to something you can actually wear.
And that confidence is what opens the door to dressmaking. Your next project could be a skirt, a pair of trousers, a blouse or even a dress!
