I’ve been asked a few times now where I buy my fabric and haberdashery bits and pieces. I do buy some things online but also like to support my local shops and businesses, so I thought I would write a post on all of the fabric and haberdashery shops in Harrogate and York that I have discovered over the last few years!
FABRIC & HABERDASHERY SHOPS IN HARROGATE:
The Remnant House: www.remnanthousefabric.co.uk
The Remnant House on Commercial Street in Harrogate is a treasure trove of sewing goodies! It has a great selection of all types of fabrics – lots of lovely dressmaking fabrics, a massive range of cottons for quilting and crafting plus a whole variety of upholstery / furnishing weight materials. You can also source all of your haberdashery needs here too. I really like the Remnant House and generally can’t resist going in for a browse every time I go into Harrogate!
The White Rose Sewing & Craft Centre: www.whiterosesewing.com
The White Rose Sewing & Craft Centre is my ‘go to’ shop for sewing machines and is also on Commercial Street in Harrogate. I’ve bought my last three machines here (two sewing machines and an overlocker) and have been really pleased with them and the service I received. I’ve also had one of my older machines serviced here and one of my newer ones fixed when I inadvertently broke one of the parts! So it’s a great place to bookmark for looking after your machine. They also sell Horn sewing furniture plus sewing machine accessories, some haberdashery bits and pieces like overlocker thread and a range of wool and knitting accessories.
Fine Fabrics of Harrogate: www.finefabricsofharrogate.co.uk
Fine Fabrics used to be located just off Skipton Road in Harrogate but sadly closed their shop in recent years. They now have regular pop-up shops in various locations – the last one I went to was at the Bilton Community Centre, just outside Harrogate. They have a brilliant range of beautiful dressmaking fabrics and notions and also now offer appointments at their studio in Knaresborough. Their next pop up is at the Oatlands Community Center in Harrogate on Saturday March 2nd 2024 10.30 -3.30.
Cone Exchange: www.coneexchange.org
The Cone Exchange is a community scrap store that works with local schools and community groups to exchange, re-use and sell donated waste materials from businesses in the area. I have only visited once so far but was amazed at what they have – fabrics, dressmaking patterns, buttons, sewing and crafting books, beads, sequins, vintage magazines, ribbons and also lots of other crafty supplies. All very reasonably priced. My understanding is that their stock changes all the time as different things get donated but it’s a great place to have a browse and stock up on anything you need. They are based on Hookstone Park in Harrogate - HG2 7DB.
Bolts and Bobbins: www.boltsandbobbins.co.uk
Bolts and Bobbins used to be a lovely shop on Kings Road in Harrogate but sadly closed down a few year ago. They are still live as a business and now just trade online via their website and occasional pop up shops. They sell fabrics, haberdashery, dressmaking patterns and sewing gifts.
Duttons for Buttons: www.duttonsforbuttons.co.uk
Duttons for Buttons have shops in both Harrogate - Oxford Street and York - Coppergate (and also Ilkley) and are a family run business selling a massive range of buttons and haberdashery items. They have a long history which dates back to 1906 and the shop in York is housed in a medieval building which is over 600 years old.
FABRIC AND HABERDASHERY SHOPS IN YORK
Gillies Fabrics: www.gilliesfabrics.co.uk
Gillies Fabrics is on Peter Lane in York city centre and has an amazing array of beautiful fabrics all displayed on lovely neat shelving units which make them easy to view and browse. The range of fabrics is really broad and you are bound to find what you are looking for in there. They also have a great shelf of sewing and crafting books with some really different titles which I hadn’t seen before, last time I visited. Plus a really large section of threads and all of the haberdashery items that you could want. They sell sewing machines and in addition they host sewing and dressmaking workshops upstairs. A really great shop which I would definitely recommend.
Sewcialising: www.sewcialising.com
Sewcialising is a relatively new shop having opened in 2020 and is based both in York city centre at 1 Coffee Yard where they have a lovely shop and studio space and also at Clifton Moor on the outskirts of York. The shop is housed in a grade II listed building which Kathy, the owner, renovated herself and is full of gorgeous fabrics, dressmaking patterns, haberdashery items and cute sewing accessories.
Hobby Craft: www.hobbycraft.co.uk/stores/york
Although I prefer to shop with independent local businesses, this list wouldn’t be complete without reference to Hobby Craft. If you are shopping on the Monks Cross retail park then Hobby Craft does have a relatively small range of fabrics plus it sells sewing machines if you are on the look out for one. Obviously in addition to all of the other crafty supplies!
So that’s my list of shops for sewing enthusiasts in the Harrogate and York area. Have I missed any? If so, let me know in the comments below!
