Last night’s Great British Sewing Bee was a bit of a horror show wasn’t it? ;-). Or at least the Made to Measure Challenge was anyway! Week eight was movie week and the five remaining contestants were challenged with three projects inspired by films and the cinema.
Pattern Challenge – Week 8
For the pattern challenge this week, Patrick and Esmee asked the sewers to make a jacket inspired by Tippi Hendren’s character in the Alfred Hitchcock film – The Birds. Cue lots of images of the pigeons surrounding the mills where the Bee is filmed! The jacket design could be attributed to the costume designer, Edith Head and they had five hours to make it. It looked like a fairly simple jacket but it turned out to be deceptively difficult. It featured grown on sleeves, a gusset under the arm and patch pockets, with 17 pattern pieces in total. That’s a lot of cutting out and so much sewing to complete in the time available. If there is one thing I don’t like about the show it’s the time limits! I know there has to be one but to me, they always seem so short and don’t allow the contestants to demonstrate their best sewing. Regardless there were some great jackets produced in some lovely wool fabrics.
I absolutely love jackets so I did enjoy watching this one. I do prefer a jacket with a set in sleeve though, as I think it looks more structured and elegant, so I probably wouldn't sew the pattern they used.
I do have a Pinterest board where I collate jackets that I'm inspired by. If you would like to check it out, click here!
Transformation Challenge – Week 8
The transformation challenge continued the film theme with the sewers tasked with making a glamourous outfit for a Hollywood after-party from some old red cinema curtains and tie backs! Whoever comes up with the ideas for the show has a great imagination and the contestants were once more full of creativity and came up with some red carpet worthy looks.
Made To Measure Challenge – Week 8
In the final challenge of this week, Orla, Kit, Gaynor, Yasmin and Caz had to design an outfit for a character from a horror movie. They were given the luxury of being able to cut out their fabric prior to starting the challenge and had to ensure that their piece was definitely a costume and not fancy dress, according to Patrick. I’m not sure where the line can be drawn between those two but as usual, the sewers surpassed expectations and created some amazing garments. The two most scary for me were Kit’s scarecrow and Orla’s doll! I went to bed straight after watching and I’m surprised I didn’t have nightmares!

Only four contestants left now and ready to move into next week’s semi-final. Who is your money on to win?
