I can honestly say that I have been sewing nearly all my life. Well, at least from the point at which I could hold a needle and thread in my hand! I can’t quite pinpoint why I love it so much. There are so many reasons and ultimately, it’s just 'my thing' and it makes me happy!

If you have found your way to this page, it may be because you are thinking about learning to sew yourself but maybe haven’t started as yet.

My aim today is to give you 10 good reasons why you should take that leap and go for it and why you will never look back!

1 – When you make your own clothes, you never turn up to an event in the same outfit as someone else. You can totally avoid that embarrassing situation by making something yourself which is completely unique to you.

2- When you can make your own clothes, you can sew an outfit that is unique to your body shape and not rely on the size ranges in the shops. Those ranges are often very limiting but there are no limits when you sew your own.

3 – Sewing is great for your brain! Following a pattern and interpreting the instructions really helps to keep your mind active like doing a jigsaw or learning a new language.

4 – When you have a job that means you have to sit at a computer all day, sewing is a great creative outlet.

5 – If someone compliments you on your outfit, its great to be able to say…..’Thank you…I made it myself!’

6 – When you sew your own clothes, you are more likely to cherish them and wear them on repeat, rather than contributing to fast fashion that ends up in landfill

7 – Sewing great for your mental health. It involves having to concentrate on the task in hand, being present in the moment, offering a distraction to negative thoughts and giving your mind a break.

8 – It gives you the perfect excuse to buy lots and lots (and lots) of beautiful fabrics!

9 – When you sew your own clothes (or any other fabric project) there is always something new to learn….a new fabric to trial, a new pattern to test, a new technique to master, a new design to fit to your body.

10 – When you sew your own clothes, you can re-create designer outfits that you like for a fraction of the price tag.

So there we have it, my top ten reasons why learning to sew is great and why you should try it too!
