Welcome to part one of my new series on bias binding! Such a useful tool for dressmaking and general sewing.

What is bias binding?

Bias binding or bias tape is a narrow piece of material which has been cut on the bias of the fabric. This means its cut at a 45 degree angle from the selvedge and this gives it stretch and flexibility.

You can use it to bind straight or curved edges and it will give you a nice clean finish.

It comes with each of the raw edges pressed into the middle and this is called single fold binding but you can also get double fold where its folded twice.

Bias binding is great for finishing necklines and armholes for example in dressmaking but it can also be used in other sewing projects like quilting where you can use it to bind your quilt edges.

It comes in various different widths and can be sewn so its on the inside of your project and doesn't show on the right side, or, it can be sewn on the outside as a decorative accent!
