How To Gather Fabric

Gathering fabric is a really easy way to add interest to handmade garments and accessories. Here’s how:

Set your sewing machine to a nice long straight stitch length.

Make sure you start sewing with nice long thread tails to the back of your machine.

You’re going to now sew three lines of stitching along the area of fabric you want to be gathered:

◦ One at a quarter inch seam allowance

◦ One at half an inch seam allowance

◦ And one at three quarters

Make sure you don’t cut your threads at the end of each line and instead leave nice long thread tails like you did at the start.

Once your stitching lines are sewn, take hold of the bobbin threads (the ones on the wrong side of the fabric) and with your other hand pull the fabric in the opposite direction.

Do the same from the other end of your fabric and even the gathers out with your fingers.

Continue this until you have the amount of gathering you need for your project.

Then you can sew this into your project wherever it’s needed.
