HOW TO MAKE YOUR OWN PIPING TO ADD ONTO CLOTHING, HOME FURNISHINGS & ACCESSORY PROJECTS
You’ll need:
Fabric
Piping cord
Matching thread
Scissors / or a rotary cutter and mat
A ruler with a 45 degree line on
A sewing machine
Instructions:
Take your fabric and cut out strips on the bias grain. That’s at 45 degrees to the selvedge. Mine are 1.5 inches wide
Place the strips right sides together at right angles and then sew from the top left hand side to the bottom right
Trim the seam allowances down and press the seams open
Now take your piping cord and place it in the middle of the wrong side of the fabric strips. Wrap the fabric around the cord so it sits snug inside the fold and make sure the raw edges of the fabric are sitting on top of each other
With the zip foot on your sewing machine, sew down the strips of fabric with the needle close to but not on top of the piping. Back stitching at both ends. If you’ve got a piping foot for your sewing machine then you can use that instead of the zip foot
And there’s your piping all ready to sew into your project!
