BIAS BINDING SERIES - Part 3 - How to cut out fabric for bias binding

Writer: Amy BuddAmy Budd

Welcome to part three of this series on bias binding! This one is all about how to cut out your fabric strips.

These are the tools you will need: A cutting mat.  A rotary cutter.  A ruler with a 45 degree marking.  Your fabric!

Bias binding is cut from fabric at a 45 degree angle from the selvedge - this is the direction of the fabric which has the most stretch.

Lay your fabric onto your cutting mat so that the selvedge is in line with one of the vertical lines on your mat and position your ruler so that it's on the 45 degree diagonal line on your mat.

Then take your rotary cutter and cut along the fabric following the edge of your ruler.

Now you have one cut in the fabric at 45 degrees, you can use that line to cut out your strips.

For example, if you are making binding strips that are one inch wide, then place the one inch line on your ruler on the cut edge of your fabric and cut along the next line.

Repeat this until you have enough strips for the length of binding you require.

Look out for my next video on how to sew these strips together!
