BUTTON SERIES - Part 1 - How to Sew On a Button with Four Holes

Writer's picture: Amy BuddAmy Budd

Welcome to my January mini series on all things buttons! This one is all about how to sew on a button with four holes. Hope it's useful!

  1. Take some thread in a matching colour and thread your needle.

  2. Push the needle up from underneath the fabric to the top and pull the thread through so you just have a small loop remaining on the underside.

  3. Push the needle back down through the fabric from the top to the underside and then through the loop you left in the previous step. Then sew a few stitches on the same spot to secure.

  4. Bring the needle to the top of the fabric again and pick up your button.

  5. Thread the needle up through one of the holes and then back down through the hole which is diagnonally opposite.  Continue to push the needle back down into the fabric and through to the other side, pulling the thread so it's taut but not too tight.

  6. Repeat that five or six times until the button starts to feel secure and then repeat the same process using the other two holes.

  7. You should finish with the needle on the underside of the fabric and sew a few securing stitches just through the fabric underneath the button.

  8. Instead of sewing across the holes diagonally, you could instead sew them parallel instead.
