BUTTON SERIES - Part 2 - How to Sew on a Shank Back Button

Writer's picture: Amy BuddAmy Budd

Welcome to part two of my January mini series on buttons! This one describes how to sew on a shank back button.

  1. Take some thread in a matching colour and cut a piece which is about the length of your hand to your elbow.

  2. Put the two ends together so you have double thread.

  3. Thread your needle and pull the loop of the thread to the bottom.

  4. Put the needle through your fabric where you want the button to sit; pull it through so that the loop is still showing on the other side.

  5. Put the needle back down through the fabric and through the loop to secure it. Then sew a few small stitches on that same spot to fully secure.

  6. Now take your button and turn it over so that the shank is facing you. Put the needle and thread through the shank and then back down into the fabric where you did your securing stitches, placing the button in its correct position.

  7. Then do several more stitches through the fabric and through the shank until the button feels secure enough - maybe five or six.

  8. Pull the needle and thread to the back of the fabric and sew a few small stitches just through the fabric underneath the button to secure.

  9. Then cut your thread.
