BUTTON SERIES - Part 3 - How to Sew on a Button With Two Holes

Writer's picture: Amy BuddAmy Budd

Welcome to part three of my mini button series! I had a button come off one of my cardigans so I filmed a little tutorial about how to sew it back on. So here goes 'How to Sew on a Two Hole Button'.....Hope it's useful!

  1. Firstly mark the placement of the button with a pin using the corresponding buttonhole.

  2. Then take a piece of thread in a matching colour which is about double the length of your hand to your elbow, bring the two short ends together so you have a loop at the opposite end.

  3. Thread your needle and bring the loop to the bottom.

  4. Then thread the needle through your garment from underneath to the top leaving the loop of the thread on the underside.

  5. Put the needle back down through the fabric and through the loop, then sew one or two securing stitches on the same spot.

  6. Now take your button and thread your needle through one of the holes from underneath the fabric upwards.

  7. Put the needle back down through the second hole in the button and then back down through the fabric ensuring the button is in the correct position.

  8. Repeat this until the button is secure.

  9. Thread the needle back down through the button to the otherside and sew a few securing stitches just through the fabric.

  10. Then cut your threads!
