Once you have been sewing a while, you will probably start to accumulate lots of ‘things’! Fabric, patterns, sewing tools, bits and pieces…..and all of them need a place or your whole home will start to look a bit like a haberdashery! In today’s post, I am showing you eight sewing space organisation ideas which I use to keep my sewing paraphernalia under control!

– Boxes for your sewing patterns – collecting dressmaking patterns is quite possibly a hobby in itself, so you need somewhere to store them. You could buy some ready made boxes which work really well but I like to make things where I can and I used this Sturdy Fabric Basket pattern from Lillyella Stitchery to make several boxes to organise all of my dressmaking patterns.

– Drawers to organise your fabric / tools / threads etc – I bought these Multi Colour Storage Tower Drawers from Hobbycraft when I was looking for a new way to get my sewing things organised last year. They are perfect for categorising all of your small bits and pieces like threads, elastics, fabric scraps, ribbons, interfacing, craft magazines, wool, the list goes on. They don’t come with labels but I was feeling arty one day and created some myself. If you just use paper and magic tape to stick them on, you can easily pull them off when you decide to change up the contents of your drawers. I really like these, so much so that I have three sets of them!

– Desktop cubes – these are the fabric equivalent of pen pots. As I said above, I like to make things!! So these were made from a Sew Sweetness pattern within the Minikins Series 1. They are perfect for storing scissors, pens, pencils, sewing gauges, quick unpicks, etc - any small-ish sewing tools that you want to keep to hand. It’s a great pattern with really clear instructions.

– Small gift boxes and glass jars – look out for any household or gift items that come in small cardboard boxes or glass jars – like some deserts that you can buy! I keep all of these and use them to organise beads / sequins / etc. I like to add embellishments onto my handmade garments to make them extra special where I can, so have a stash of beads for that purpose. These types of little boxes and jars are ideal for keeping them together.

– Small shelving units. I have three of these in my sewing room from Ikea. I bought them several years back and I can’t find the exact ones on the website still but there are lots that are very similar. I use mine for storing my fabric stash!

– Purpose built sewing table – the Cub Plus – this one is from Horn Sewing Furniture. I’ve had it for years and always sit at it to do my sewing but it also doubles up as useful storage as it comes with little shelves and craft boxes to put thread reels and bobbins, etc. If you are short on space, this is a particularly useful version because it can fold back on itself and close up to half its size.

– Fabric scrap baskets – another thing to make yourself with scraps leftover from other sewing projects – you can then use your baskets to store any other sewing bits that need tidying up! Megan Neilson has a great tutorial for these on YouTube.

– Finally….book storage – I love a good craft / sewing book and have built up quite a collection over the years. I used these plastic boxes, again from Ikea, sat on their sides as a mini book shelf in my sewing room.
