This week I thought I would do a short, but shameless, plug of my new shop on The British Craft House – ‘Bags from Dress By Amy’.
I opened the shop about a month and a half ago and it is dedicated to the bags that I make using the fabric scraps that are leftover from my dressmaking projects (and also fabrics that are kindly given to me for dressmaking but are not suitable, or big enough, to make clothes).
My experience so far on the platform has been great. It feels so much more personal than selling on other online marketplaces. Dottie, the owner of The British Craft House (TBCH), is very much hands on and contactable and there is a brilliant, supportive, private Facebook group for sellers which has been so useful with others answering questions and sharing their knowledge. I have learnt more about search engine optimisation in the six or so weeks I’ve been on the platform than I learnt in four years with Etsy! So I’m excited about moving forward with my shop and learning, progressing and making it a success.
So what exactly am I selling? I make clutch bags, evening bags, shoulders bags and also make up and cosmetic bags. Each one is quilted on the sewing machine and they all have some kind of floral element to them; whether that’s as part of the fabric used or with hand embriodery or beautiful floral trims hand sewn onto the surface. This is actually my favourite part of the process; making them all individual and unique.
In terms of patterns used, some are self-drafted but I also use patterns from Pink Pony Design and Sew Sweetness. I love bag making almost as much as I love making clothes and its great being able to put my fabric scraps to good use rather than throwing them away in the bin.
I have included below some of the bags currently available and here is the link to the full shop.
Whilst you are there, I would definitely also recommend taking a look at some of the other lovely shops on TBCH. All owned by talented makers from across the UK.
