Online Fashion Exhibitions

A lap top open with the keyboard showing and some fashion pictures on the screen

Last year I went to visit two excellent fashion exhibitions.  One in Manchester - Unpicking Couture - and one in Edinburgh – Beyond the Little Black Dress.  Now that we’re in 2024, I would like to go and see some more but its sometimes just not convenient to travel.  So, I started to look online to see what was available and came across lots of great exhibitions which you can view without actually going anywhere!

The advantage of viewing these online is that you can take as long as you like to read the captions next to each exhibit.  Often when I visit an exhibition in person, I feel rushed to read all of the information presented because other people want to read it too or those I’m with don’t want to linger as long as I do!  So, this seemed like a perfect solution!

I’ve listed below some of my favourites and will add to this list as I find more.

***I use the term ‘exhibition’ loosely…some of these are really just articles which have been based on an exhibition that a certain museum has held in the past.  But all really thought provoking if you are into your fashion and dressmaking!***

Second Skin – The Science of Stretch – all about stretch fabrics and how they support various parts of our lives – very short reading with pictures

Really interesting exhibition charting the development of underwear over the years from corsets, crinolines and bustles in the Victorian era to bullet bras, to a history of men’s underwear to introductions to modern day lingerie designers.  Broken down into easily digestible segments with reading sections and short videos.

Explores the evolution of wedding dresses, including why white is considered the ‘typical’ wedding dress colour, where the ‘something old, something new....’ rhyme came from and watching the design process from some top fashion designers including Gareth Pugh

Lots of short videos of live fashion events presented at the V&A – good introduction to some fashion designers that you may not have heard of and also some that you probably will have done!

Great fashion inspiration for the 70s and 80s in the form of a short video and then photographs of each garment with a short description in PDF format.

A delve into some of Schiaparelli’s most iconic looks

A fascinating insight into the designs of Cristobal Balenciaga, looking at the pattern cutting and construction of some of his garments in 2D video and also how his designs still influence modern day designers

An interesting nine-minute video introducing and touring the ‘In America: An Anthology of Fashion’ exhibition

Looking at how women’s fashion has evolved from Victorian times to the present day.  Also a short behind the scenes, curator’s perspective video on Victorian underwear!

The process of making a Mackintosh coat!

'Diane Von Fursenberg. Woman Before Fashion'.  This is a full virtual tour of the actual exhibition at the Fashion and Lace Museum in Brussels.  Taking you through the building itself and each and every exhibit.

Hopefully there are some here that will spark your interest!  I will definitely go to some more in-person exhibitions this year but in the meantime, online versions will keep me inspired!
