When we moved into our house a few years ago, I was lucky enough to be able to commandeer the attic room as my own, and even luckier that my partner agreed to redecorate it for me to turn it into a lovely, clean sewing space! Fast forward a few years and several room re-organisations later, I now have a fully functioning sewing room where I spend a lot of my time. As it’s the top of our house, its very hot in summer, cold in winter but is one of my favourite places to be!
Over the years I have collected several pieces of furniture, equipment and tools which make my sewing room what it is today and I thought I would show you some of them in case you are interested in adding to your own sewing space at any point.
1. Mannequins
I’ve got three mannequins. One adult one and two children’s versions. The latter being leftover from when I made children's clothes to sell at markets. Strangely I don’t actually use my adult one that much. Occasionally I find it useful when I am sewing but mostly it just stands in the corner wearing one of my latest projects that hasn’t yet made it into my wardrobe.
2. Sewing table
This is where I sit to do all of my sewing on the machine or to do my overlocking. The table is from Horn Furniture and actually folds in on itself, so its half the size you can see, in order to save room but I always keep it open. I’ve had it years now and its very useful with little shelves on the left-hand side and two boxes for threads and general sewing bits and bobs.
3. Cutting table
Again this is from Horn Furniture. If you want it to, it folds down on both sides into a much smaller unit for storage but its constantly in use so I always keep it open. It has a small ironing board attached but I haven’t really used that part as I have a separate, full size ironing board that I use.
4. Pattern rail
This is one of the rails that I used to use for the children’s clothes I sold at markets. I have now repurposed it to hang my dressmaking patterns on. These are the ones that I have traced out and are now too big to fold back into a pattern envelope.
5. Fabric shelves
I have two shelves that came from Ikea and this is where I keep my fabric. Recently I have started wrapping my fabric pieces on long bits of cardboard (salvaged from parcels we have had delivered) to keep them neat and tidy on my shelves and absolutely love how this looks! Just like it does in a fabric shop!
6. Chest of drawers
A couple of years ago I bought three colourful stacking drawer sets from Hobbycraft and this is how I keep all of the smaller things in my sewing room neat and tidy. I have drawers for tools, for my threads, for my zips, for pens, pencils. One for all of my scissors, one for my ribbons and trims, one for my buttons, another one for the buttons I sell on Etsy……you get the idea!
7. Pattern shelf
For all of the patterns that I have yet to make, or that I have made and have managed to fit back in their envelopes, I have a shelf with boxes where I store them all. Nice and neat!
8. Chair
For a long time I didn’t have a comfy chair in my sewing room and ended up sitting on the floor if I needed to sit down for anything! When my back started complaining I decided to get a nice, soft chair to sit in and its now one of my best purchases. Its nice and small, so doesn’t take up too much room and I’m sat on it now writing this blog post! From HomeSense.
9. Ironing Board
I’m very lucky to have a Laura Star iron and ironing board in my sewing room. It’s a professional grade steam ironing system which is a luxury but definitely worth it!
So those are the main things that make up my sewing room. What’s in yours? Let me know in the comments below.
