How To Sew A Scrunchie
Scrunchies are a great way to use up long fabric scraps leftover from other sewing projects.
Here’s how I make mine:
Draw a rectangle onto your piece of fabric which is approximately 26 inches by 3 inches. Light to medium weight fabrics are best.
Cut this out.
Fold the length of fabric in half, right sides together, pin and sew the raw edges together. I’m using a three / eighths of an inch seam allowance. Start and stop about two inches from either end and remember to back stitch.
Turn the length of fabric right sides out. Mine is quite slippery but if you struggle, try using a loop turner.
Now turn it back on itself again so that the two short ends are right sides together.
Align the raw edges and sew them together with a three eighths of an inch seam allowance.
Pull the fabric along until you reveal the gap in the seam.
Sew this up following the same seam allowance but leave about three quarters of an inch open.
Make sure you are only sewing through the two seam allowances and not through the fabric inside of the tube.
Now turn the scrunchie right sides out through the hole that you left.
Cut a length of elastic about 6 - 7 inches long and thread it through the scrunchie with a safety pin - securing the other end with another pin to ensure it doesn’t get lost.
Join the two ends of elastic with a zig zag stitch.
Let the elastic spring back inside the scrunchie.
And sew up the small gap with some ladder stitches
Let me know below if you sew your own scrunchies! Do you use this method or a different one?
