What to Sew for Autumn / Winter 2024 – Dressmaking Inspiration

Three dressmaking patterns on a white surface

I generally feel that I am always behind the curve when it comes to seasonal sewing.  A lot of people start planning their next season clothes projects well in advance but I’m not one of them!  I tend to see patterns I like and sew them up with a vague thought about whether it’s appropriate for the current season.  Time seems to be going past so quickly at the moment that even if its not summer now, in the blink of an eye it will be again, so what does it matter if a new dress has to hang in my wardrobe for a few months before it gets its first outing??!

Having said that, I do think there is something to be said for being more organised and sewing what your wardrobe needs now and for me that’s some colder weather appropriate skirts, a new coat and / or jacket, some casual ish day dresses with sleeves and one or two fancy pieces in case of any Christmas party invites!

I’ve had a look online at patterns (one of my favourite activities when I’m not sewing!) and come up with a list of a few that I’d like to make that generally fit the criteria above!  Here they are in case you need some sewing inspiration for this season!

·         Tilly and the Buttons – Ramona skirt This is one of their newest patterns and looks like a lovely one.  It can be made from a variety of medium to heavy weight woven fabrics so you could go casual with it or make a smarter version like the pink one on the envelope.

·         Tilly and the Buttons – Ness Skirt.  This is one which has been out for a while now and seems like a great staple denim skirt design which never really goes out of fashion.

·         Simplicity Mimi G Misses' Double Breasted Jacket and Skirt Sewing Pattern, S9638.  I absolutely love the jacket on this pattern and think Mimi G’s green version on the pattern envelope is fantastic.  It looks as though it may be fairly involved with zips on either side of both the bodice and sleeves but I will give it a go and see how I get on!

·         Know Me Pattern 2070 by Mimi G from Beaute J’Adore.  This is a gorgeous trench coat pattern which comes with a child’s version too.

·         I’ve also been looking at Viki Sews patterns recently and they have several dresses that I like including the Odelia, Andie, Maryam, Velma and Agnessa.  Oh and the Florence too!

·       I've just bought the Cozy Cover Coat from Daria Pattern Making.   This is a beautiful quilted coat, perfect for Autumn / Winter.  I’ve never sewn with pre-quilted fabric for dressmaking before so I would definitely like to try this one.

·         A nice new pair of pyjamas is lovely for this time of year and the Carolyn Pyjamas pattern from Closet Core patterns is one that is always talked about a lot.

·         Finally the Tilly and the Buttons Lyra Dress pattern has been sat on my self for a while now so I really need to try this one and think it would be a great day dress for Autumn if you use the long sleeve option

There are many more that I could list but I will leave it there for now.  Have any of these made your ‘to-sew’ list this November?
