I’ve recently added a new section to my website on the sewing and dressmaking tuition that I offer, so thought I would do a blog post to say a bit more about the group workshops.
I’ve got three workshops scheduled at Just Makers in Ripley:
Sew a tiered and gathered skirt for summer - 28th April
Sew a child’s shirred dress - 19th May
Sew a jersey top/dress - 1 September
Just Makers is a lovely shop situated in Ripley Castle Courtyard selling an ever-changing range of handmade items from local small, businesses. From jewellery to homeware and beautiful artwork to unique gifts, it offers something for everyone wanting to support independent makers and artists.
Above the shop is the ideal workroom which accommodates a wide range of workshops in various different arts and crafts. There’s room for four participants in my dressmaking classes which ensures a small, friendly environment with lots of interaction and support throughout the day. Classes run from 10:30 to 16:30 with plenty of tea / coffee and cake available! Participants can bring their own packed lunch or buy something tasty from the café opposite or the farm shop next door. Parking is available on site.
All three workshops are suitable for anyone who owns, and knows how to use, a sewing machine. You don’t need to have prior dressmaking experience as the class is pitched at beginner level but you do need to have basic sewing skills – i.e. know how to thread your machine, how to wind a bobbin, how to sew a straight stitch / zig zag stitch, know what a seam allowance is, etc.
The aim with all three workshops is to complete the item by the end of the day. However, if for whatever reason you don’t manage to finish, I am happy to offer support via email / phone or further one to one lessons after the class.
All of the skills that you will learn on the course are not only applicable to the garment that you are making but can be used in any of your future dressmaking projects and throughout the day my aim is to impart as many tips and tricks as possible!
You need to bring your own sewing machine to the workshop along with your chosen fabric for the project and also your basic sewing kit such as scissors, pins, thread, tape measure, etc. Although spares will be provided if required.
In terms of my experience, I have been sewing all of my life in some shape and form and have been dressmaking for over ten years now. I am largely self taught through lots of trial and error with the odd sewing course thrown in. Sewing and dressmaking is my passion and around 80% of my own wardrobe is handmade.
If you have any questions about any of the workshops, please feel free to ask a question in the comments below or send me an email to amy@dressbyamy.co.uk and I will get back to you.
