Its that time of year again when thoughts turn to spooky goings on, thinking about whether I have enough sweets in the house to give to trick or treaters and most importantly how do I sew my next witches outfit ready for all those Halloween parties I’m going to be invited to….Ahem….none in the diary yet but better sew something just in case, hey?!

Sewing for Halloween or a similar specific occasion is always fun as I feel like I have more motivation to get the project completed as there is a definite deadline to work towards.  It's also more frivolous than most of my sewing and dressmaking projects as its likely to only be used once a year and so I feel I can take a little less care and skim over any mistakes without worrying too much about them!

So if you are considering what to sew for Halloween 2024, here are a few eerie, ghostly and spine chilling ideas!

1 – Halloween Decorations – If you fancy turning your home into a haunted house check out this excellent tutorial on YouTube  from Made to Sew for Felt pumpkins, bats, spiders and ghosts!

2 – Witches cape – I made this witches cape several years back now and it was very quick and straightforward to create.  It’s made of two layers of fabric – the underlayer is a black Ponte Roma but you could use any black fabric and the top layer is a fun dancing skeleton design net fabric from The Remnant House, Harrogate.  I cut out two large rectangles of both fabrics, laid them on top of each other, gathered them a few inches below the top by snipping holes approximately 1.5 inch long along the width of the fabric and then threading a black ribbon through and then finally cut the top ‘collar’ and the hem into tatters.

3 – Witches skirt – I also made a skirt to go with my cape in the same black Ponte Roma fabric. (See top picture)  I made the Bibi skirt from Tilly and the Buttons' book 'Stretch' and literally just cut tatters into the hem.  Easy peasy!

4 – Gertie’s dresses – if you fancy putting in a bit more effort than I did, you could look up some of the Halloween inspired outfits created by vintage sewing goddess, Gertie!  She has a fantastic expansion pack for one of her existing patterns which gives you everything you need to turn the original dress into a spooky ‘Morticia Adams’ gown together with a related YouTube video with sewing tips and tricks.

5 – A witches hat is an obvious choice and there are so many DIY tutorials online I couldn’t choose just one – just do a quick Google and you will find plenty!

6 – Accessories – Check out the great range of Halloween inspired fabrics at the Remnant House in Harrogate or your own local haberdashery shop and make yourself a little witches bag or a hair scrunchie.  But if you’ve spent all your time on your outfit and fancy just buying a bag instead – have a look at my Halloween inspired bags on The British Craft House.  Handmade with the fabric scraps leftover from the Halloween outfit described above!  (Sorry….shameless plug!)
