BUTTON SERIES - Part 4 - What is a Buttonhole Chisel / How to Use a Buttonhole Chisel

Writer's picture: Amy BuddAmy Budd

Welcome to part four of my button series which is all about buttonhole chisels! Enjoy!

A button hole chisel or a button hole cutter is a tool which helps you accurately open a buttonhole once you have sewn it.

It has a really sharp blade on the end which slices through the fabric and cleanly cuts through the fibres.

It comes with a mini cutting block so that you don't mark the surface you are working on.

One of the advantages of using this tool is that the risk of cutting through the buttonhole you have just sewn is much less than if you were to use a seam ripper.

All you need to do with the buttonhole chisel is take your buttonhole, place it on top of the cutting block, take your chisel and put the blade in the centre of the hole and press down with a bit of pressure until it cuts through the fabric.

Sometimes with thicker material I like to very gently rock it from side to side on the same spot.

You can usually hear a satisfying cutting sound which I love!

And that's it, your buttonhole is opened up!
