BUTTON SERIES - Part 5 - How to Sew a Buttonhole

Writer's picture: Amy BuddAmy Budd

Welcome to part five of my mini series on buttons. This time I'm showing you how I sew a buttonhole on my Janome Atelier 7 sewing machine.

  1. Find your buttonhole foot in the accessories draw.

  2. Then take the button that you want to use and insert it into the button holder at the back of the foot.

  3. Push the holder back together so that the button sits inside snuggly but not too tightly.

  4. Attach the buttonhole foot to the machine under the foot holder.

  5. Mark the placement of the buttonhole on your fabric and place it under the foot.

  6. Lower the needle into the fabric at the starting point of the buttonhole.

  7. Pull the buttonhole lever down as far as it will go.

  8. Select the type of buttonhole you want to sew.

  9. Press start and let the machine sew it for you.

  10. Once its finished, press the thread cutter button, raise the foot and remove the fabric.

  11. And there you have a beautifully sewn buttonhole!
