BUTTON SERIES - Part 6 - How to Open a Buttonhole with a Seam-Ripper

Writer's picture: Amy BuddAmy Budd

Welcome to part six of my button series where I talk you through opening a buttonhole with a seam-ripper.

  1. Take a pin and insert it into the fabric just below the horizontal stitches at the top of the buttonhole.

  2. Then take your seam ripper and insert the sharp point into the bottom of the buttonhole with the blade of the seam ripper pointing in the direction of the pin.

  3. Gently push the seam ripper up towards the pin, cutting through your fabric.

  4. If your seam ripper is a bit blunt or your fabric is quite thick, like mine here, it may take a bit of effort to get it going but eventually it will slice through nicely and the pin will stop you accidently ripping through the top!
