I’ve previously written about how to wind your bobbin and the next step in setting up your sewing machine is threading. So in this post I am going to talk through how to thread your sewing machine so that you are ready to start sewing!
Each brand and version of sewing machine will have its own particular way of threading but they all follow a very similar process. I’m demonstrating on my Janome TXL 607.
If you need a refresher on the names of the various parts of the sewing machine, see a post on that here.
Firstly make sure that your presser foot is raised and that the machine needle is raised so that the take up lever is in its highest position.
Take your chosen thread spool and place it on the spool pin with the thread coming off the spool from underneath.
Place the spool holder on the end of the pin to hold the thread spool in place.
Then draw the end of the thread away from the spool to the left and round the upper thread guide.
Next draw the thread down through the right hand groove of the thread guide, round the bottom and back up on the left hand side to the top of the machine. There are usually arrows on your machine to guide you through this section.
The thread now needs to be drawn from the right hand side to the left hand side of the take up lever and in doing so, looped through the eye of the take up lever.
From there pull the thread back down the same left hand groove towards the bottom of the machine. At this point the thread should be passed through the lower thread guide and then behind the needle bar thread guide.
Finally thread the needle from the front to the back.
Alternatively, pull the automatic needle threader knob down, wind the thread around the threader and raise the knob upwards to automatically thread the needle.
And that’s the machine threaded!
Before starting to sew, you need to put your bobbin in the bobbin holder and ensure that the thread is coming off counter-clockwise – check your sewing machine manual to ensure you get that correct. Similarly draw up the bobbin thread according to your machine’s manual – usually by raising and lowering the needle to pick up the bobbin thread and finally pull both the bobbin thread and the needle thread under and to the back of the presser foot.
…..all set and ready to sew!
